Ingredients NEEDED
- Bread: You can use any bread you like, I used classic white bread. I also enjoy using sourdough bread or ciabatta bread when making these.
- Pizza sauce: Any store-bought pizza sauce will work, or you can make homemade pizza sauce or use marinara sauce.
- Pepperoni Slices: Pre-cut slices of the pepperoni works fine – regular, small size, or turkey pepperoni.
- Fresh Mozzarella: I recommend shredding the cheese yourself for easier melting.
Variations
- Use any toppings – sausage or olives, bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, or leave it plain cheese.
- Add some shredded cheddar cheese inside – our favorite pizza place adds it and it’s so good. I also love adding in some shredded parmesan cheese.
- Add some spices inside with the cheese: dried oregano, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, or basil.
How to make a Pizza Grilled Cheese
- Assemble your sandwiches with sauce, shredded cheese, and pepperoni or other toppings on one side of the sandwich. Just use 1-2 tablespoons of sauce, depending on the size of your bread.
- Butter one side of the bread and place in a medium skillet over medium heat. Cook until golden, then flip and cook on the other side. Add a bit of cheese and pepperoni on the top and cover to melt.
Expert tips
- Don’t overfill the sandwich more than the bread can handle. Remember the sandwich is going to be squeezed between two hot plates in the press. You don’t want globs of cheese or other ingredients spilling out into the panini press, this will burn on the element of the press and create a mess.
- Once you flip the grilled cheese it will melt best if you turn the stove to medium-low heat and cover the pan.
- Use cooking spray instead of butter on the bread if you don’t want to use butter.
Storage
Store leftovers in the refrigerator in an airtight container. Reheat on the stove or in the air-fryer.

A pizza grilled cheese is the perfect marriage of a sandwich and a pepperoni pizza, perfect for lunch or dinner.

Ingredients
- 12 slices bread
- 6-8 ounces pizza sauce
- 1 (6-ounce) package sliced pepperoni (you may have leftover)
- 2 cups Mozzarella cheese , shredded
- Cooking spray or butter
Instructions
- Lay out slices of bread. Butter one side of both slices. Turn the slices over and spread 1-2 tablespoons of pizza sauce on one slice. Top with shredded cheese and pepperoni (or other toppings).
- Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place sandwich in pan (or on griddle; depending on the size of your skillet you may be able to cook more than one at a time). Cool over medium-low heat until golden, then flip.
- Once the bottom is almost toasted, top the toasted side with a bit of shredded cheese and some pepperoni slices. Cover the pan to melt.
- Serve immediately. Store leftovers in refrigerator Reheat on stove or in air fryer.
