The Best Apple Salad

If I’m going to eat a salad it has to be a delicious one and this apple walnut salad with balsamic vinaigrette is always a top choice. It has the best combination of flavors and textures. We love this salad as a side dish for weeknight dinners but it would be perfect as a main dish with some chicken on top.

Ingredients Needed

  • Lettuce: I find that spring mix is the best for this combination of ingredients! If you want to substitute it for another leafy green, or romaine, you can.
  • Cheese: I used goat cheese because it pairs so well with apple!
  • Apple: Chopped fuji apple was my choice, but you can chop up your favorite apple kind
  • Walnuts: We love the pairing of apples with walnuts, but pecans work too. Use candied walnuts for a yummy crunch.
  • Red Onion: Another tasty addition to add to this salad
  • Salad Dressing: Add your favorite store-bought dressing

Variations

  • A combination of spring mix or romaine lettuce or spinach and/or arugula would be delicious too.
  • You can swap blue cheese or feta for the goat cheese.
  • Sometimes I just drizzle the salad with olive oil and balsamic vinegar with salt and pepper instead of using a vinaigrette.

Expert tips

  • For the apple, I like to chop it so you have bite-sized pieces. Just remove the stem, cut the apple in half, and cut out the core. Turn each half cut-side down on the cutting board. Slice each half lengthwise into 1-inch slices. Holding the slices in place, slice across those cuts to make cubes.
  • Toasting the walnuts brings out their flavor and it’s easy to do! You can spread them on a baking sheet and toast them in the oven for a few minutes at 350°F. Keep an eye on them!
  • You can use pretty much any apple that you like so feel free to experiment. If you like more tartness try using Granny Smith apples or try another variety like Pink Lady, Gala, or Honeycrisp.
  • You could also add feta or cranberries!
