The best Salad bar

A Salad Board is one of my favorite things to serve at any party because people can pick exactly what they want on their salad and don’t have to pick things off if they don’t like it. It is also good for family dinner incase the family has different taste. Kids love this recipe because they feel cool being able to make their own dinner!

It’s fun for adults, too. Just like a charcuterie board or cheese platter, a salad board is an opportunity to create something that’s not only delicious but great to look at, too. The best news is that it’s not hard to do and makes a great option if you’re looking for a quick and easy 30 minute meal to make!

Here are the salad bar ingredients we like:

  • Lettuce: We love romaine in our house! If you want to use a variation of mixed greens that is fine too!
  • Chicken: I like cutting meat into small cubes for salads because it is easy to eat that way.
  • Avocados
  • Cherry Tomatoes
  • Bell Peppers: We typically use red, but yellow and orange are also yummy in salad.
  • Tortilla Strips
  • Bacon: I used store-bought bacon crumbles, but you could use actual chopped bacon.
  • Cheddar Cheese: Or any cheese that you love!
  • Almonds: Thinly sliced almonds are great, but you can use other nuts if you’d like too!
  • Celery
  • Red Onion
  • Dressing: Balsamic vinegar, Caesar, or any favorite dressing are great options to be put on the side!

Variations

  • Some other ideas of things you can to add to a board dinner are vegetables like cucumber, shredded carrots, cauliflower, diced red pepper, or corn.
  • I love adding croutons along side the tortilla strips.
  • For some more cheese options, you could do mozzarella, feta cheese, or parmesan cheese.
  • You could add black beans, chickpeas, or pasta
  • If you don’t want to use chicken, you could also add turkey or ham, or even hard-boiled eggs.
  • Add ranch dressing or Thousand Island, or just olive oil and lemon juice or vinegar with salt and pepper.
  • We also love fruit in salad – add strawberries or cranberries or any berries as a topping.

How Do You Make a Salad Bar?

  • Put dressings, almonds and cheese in small serving bowls. Place one in each corner of the board. Place lettuce down the middle of the board. Add each ingredient in a pile down the sides of the board.
  • Pick and choose the ingredients you like. Toss on your plate and enjoy.

Expert Tips

  • Use a rotisserie chicken to make this salad bar really easy!
  • I think every salad needs some crunch, and there are lots of options – use chopped nuts like walnuts, almonds, pecans, and cashews or add some sunflower seeds.
  • Switch up the lettuce and use iceberg, spring greens mix, butter lettuce, spinach, or do a combination of lettuces.
  • We like to add some good bread to go with the salad, like a baguette or loaf of sourdough.

Storage

Put all the ingredients into individual airtight containers in the fridge or pantry! Then when you want to have it again, you can bring it back out!
