A Cherry Black Cow is a root beer float with grenadine. With only 3 ingredients, this dessert drink is quick to make and so delectable. It’s a classic float with a sweet-tart twist that you are sure to enjoy!

A glass of root beer float with vanilla ice cream, topped with a maraschino cherry and two red-and-white striped straws. An A&W root beer can and a jar of cherries are in the background.

Cherry root beer is like a Shirley Temple or a Roy Rogers but with root beer (or diet root beer). Adding ice cream really brings out the rich flavors of the soda, making for a delicious treat. Root beer floats are a classic recipe for a reason – bubbly root beer with a scoop of rich vanilla ice cream is pretty tough to beat. Add grenadine for some fruity sweetness and it becomes irresistible! It’s the perfect non-alcoholic float.

A tub of Signature Select Homestyle Vanilla ice cream, a can of A&W Zero Sugar Root Beer, and a small clear glass bottle filled with red liquid are arranged side by side on a white surface.

How to Make a Cherry Black Cow

  1. Start with your favorite root beer – any brand, diet or regular. I like A&W, but choose whatever you like best.
  2. Add some grenadine syrup. This adds a sweet and tart flavor and mixes so perfectly with the root beer.
  3. Carefully add a scoop of vanilla ice cream – it really brings out the flavor of the cherry root beer
  4. Don’t forget the cherry on top!

Dorothy’s expert tips

  • I used A&W zero sugar root beer for this recipe, because it’s my favorite. For the best Cherry Black Cow, use your own favorite kind of root beer.
  • Add the scoop of ice cream slowly and carefully, to avoid overflowing.
  • A classic root beer float calls for vanilla ice cream, but feel free to experiment with other flavors you might enjoy like caramel ice cream.
  • Try drizzling some chocolate syrup on top for some added flavor and sweetness!
