Cherry Root Beer is a delicious non-alcoholic drink that kids and adults alike will enjoy! Root beer is a timeless classic and adding cherry flavor is really refreshing. It’s so quick and easy to make, and I know you will love it!

A glass of dark soda filled with ice, garnished with three bright red maraschino cherries on a cocktail pick, sits on a white surface. A second glass and a bowl of cherries are blurred in the background.

Cherry Root Beer is like a Shirley Temple or Roy Rogers but made with root beer and grenadine. Store bought cherry root beer is fine, but I prefer making my own, because you can adjust it to your taste. You can choose your favorite type and brand of root beer and control the amount of sweetness added.

There are just two simple ingredients, root beer and grenadine. Root beer is flavorful and bubbly, and the grenadine syrup adds a fruity sweetness. It’s so refreshing, you’ll think it came straight from the soda fountain!

A can of A&W Zero Sugar Root Beer stands next to a small glass bottle containing a red liquid. Part of a glass bowl with red liquid is visible on the right, all set on a white surface.

How to Make a Cherry Root Beer

  1. The best root beer recipes start with your favorite root beer – any brand, diet or regular. Sarsaparilla soda works as well, since there is little discrimination between the two.
  2. Add some grenadine syrup, similar to a Shirley Temple or Roy Rogers. This adds a sweet and tart flavor and mixes so perfectly with the root beer.
  3. Then, as with any good cherry soda drink, garnish with a maraschino cherry (or 3!)

Dorothy’s Expert Tips

  • My personal root beer list is short: A&W zero sugar. It’s my favorite and I use it for this recipe, but use whatever you like best.
  • You can make homemade grenadine if you prefer, or use the juice from a maraschino cherry jar as a substitute.
  • Cherry root beer is best enjoyed immediately after mixing.
  • Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and you have a Cherry Black Cow!
