French toast is always a great breakfast treat, but it can be a hassle. Dipping and cooking individual pieces takes time, and if you’re making a big batch, half of the French toast is cold before you finish cooking the rest.

A crockpot solves this issue and makes it so easy to make a big batch of French toast. It’s similar to a baked French toast casserole, but instead of turning on the oven, you turn on the slow cooker and leave it to cook the French toast.

We love this French toast in crockpot recipe when we want to host a family breakfast or brunch. It’s easy to do, and you can lay out different toppings so everyone can add their favorites. It’s great for holidays or just regular weekends!

Ingredients

  • French bread cut into 1” cubes
  • Large eggs
  • Milk
  • Vanilla extract
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Salt
  • Cold butter cut into small cubes

How to Make Crockpot French Toast

Place the bread cubes in a large bowl. Combine the eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt in a separate mixing bowl. Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes and let them soak for an hour and a half to two hours.

Grease the crockpot with cooking spray or butter. Add the soaked bread cubes, and then sprinkle the cold butter cubes over the top.

Cook the French toast on low for about three and a half hours or until the internal temperature is at least 160°F.

If your crockpot has an insert you can remove, take it out and let the French toast rest at room temperature for 10 to 15 minutes. If it doesn’t have a removable insert, turn the crockpot off and take off the lid.

French Toast Toppings

There are a lot of different toppings you can serve with your crockpot French toast casserole. Mix and match your favorites!

  • Syrup: Warm maple syrup or your favorite fruit syrup like strawberry or blueberry are delicious.
  • Fresh Fruit: Top your French toast with sliced bananas and strawberries, or sprinkle blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries over the top.
  • Nuts: Add some crunch with chopped walnuts, pecans, almonds, or macadamia nuts.
  • Other toppings: A dusting of powdered sugar is always good, or try a dollop of whipped cream.

How do you know when crockpot French toast is done cooking?

The easiest way to know when it’s done is to use a thermometer to measure the internal temperature. It should be at least 160°F.
