Looking to organize your pantry like a pro? A well-stocked and organized pantry is essential for creating an efficient kitchen space that works for you. Having the right pantry essentials—and a smart organization system—will transform your kitchen into a cooking space you’ll love to be in.

Essential Food Items
Let’s be real – your pantry needs food, but you don’t need everything those pro chefs recommend. I’m going to break down what actually matters and share the essentials, plus some game-changing ingredients that you may not have thought of when it comes to a well-stocked pantry. Take what works for you and ignore the rest – we’re building a home pantry, not a restaurant’s pantry!
Grains and Starches
- Rice – Start with long-grain and jasmine, then venture on to brown rice and arborio rice.
- Pasta – Top three I suggest are: spaghetti, shells, and penne
- Quinoa – This may seem like an unlikely staple, but it’s extremely nutritious and has a long shelf-life. You can easily substitute it in for rice.
- Oats – Old-fashioned and quick oats
- Flour – All-purpose flour and bread flour
- Crackers
- Tortilla chips
Canned and Jarred Goods
- Tomatoes – There are so many different kinds like whole, diced, sauce, and paste, all of which to stock up on. Other tomato items like salsa and marinara are also essential.
- Beans – Black, pinto, kidney, and chickpeas
- Canned Meats – Tuna, salmon, and even canned chicken
- Broth – You can buy this already bottle, but I prefer using Better Than Bouillon in beef and chicken flavors.
- Condiments – Olives, pickles, mayo, mustard, and pesto
- Sauces – BBQ, Worcestershire, soy sauce, and hot sauce
- Jam
- Peanut Butter
- Canned Vegetables – Green beans, corn, roasted red peppers, peas, and green chiles are my go-tos.
Cooking Basics
- Oils – Olive, vegetable, and coconut
- Vinegars – Balsamic, apple cider, rice, and white distilled
- Liquid Sweeteners – Honey and pure maple syrup
- Sugar – Granulated sugar, brown sugar, and powdered sugar
- Salt (table and kosher) and pepper
- Baking powder
- Baking soda
- Cornstarch
- Cocoa powder
- Vanilla extract
- Chocolate chips
- Yeast
- Cooking Spray
- Basic spices – Cinnamon, cumin, smoked paprika, chili powder, oregano, thyme, rosemary, and basil
- Garlic powder
- Onion Powder
- Teas and coffees
Paper Goods and Non-Food Essentials
- Paper towels and napkins
- Food storage bags (various sizes)
- Aluminum foil
- Parchment paper
- Plastic wrap
- Garbage bags
- Kitchen cleaning solutions – Dishwasher detergent, liquid dish soap, hand soap, oven cleaner, disinfecting wipes, and an all-purpose cleaner

- Clear airtight containers for dry goods
- Expandable shelf for your non-food essentials
- Lazy Susans for corners and deep spaces
