Three chili dogs topped with cheese and frito chips

This chili dogs recipe is always a family-favorite dinner at our house. Hot dogs, chili, and soft buns are a classic combination.

I like to grill the hot dogs during the summer to get those nice char marks, but you can also cook them on the stove if you don’t have a grill.

I use canned chili to keep it simple, but any chili you like will work. Use your favorite homemade chili recipe or choose a favorite prepared one.

Don’t forget the toppings! We like lots of cheddar cheese, some red onion, and some corn chips on top for extra crunch.

This is an easy weeknight dinner – if you love chili cheese dogs, you’ll love how easy they are to make at home.

Ingredients

  • All-beef hot dogs
  • Canned chili with no beans
  • Fritos
  • Shredded cheddar cheese
  • Chopped red onion
  • Hot sauce

How to Make Chili Dogs

Warm the chili following the directions on the can. Add the hot sauce and stir until combined.

Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Grill the hot dogs until they are warmed through. In the last minute or so, place the hot dog buns cut-side down on the grill to warm them up and get light char marks.

Place the hot dogs on the buns and spoon chili over the top of each. Sprinkle the chopped onions and shredded cheddar over the top. Top the chili dogs with the corn chips and serve.

Cooking Tips

If you don’t have an outdoor grill, you can cook the hotdogs on the stove in a pan.

Boil method: Bring a pot of water to boil, add the hot dogs, and cook them for a few minutes until they are warmed through.

Pan method: Spray a nonstick skillet with cooking spray. Heat it over medium heat and add the hot dogs. Cook them, turning them often, until they are hot.

Variations

Hot dogs: I like all-beef hot dogs, but whatever you like will work.

Chili: There are lots of options! Choose your favorite kind or use your own homemade recipe.

Cheese: Instead of cheddar cheese, try pepper jack cheese, Monterey jack, Mexican cheese blend, or other good melting shredded cheese.

Garnishes: Switch up the garnishes and try sliced green onions, pickled jalapenos, and chopped herbs like cilantro or parsley. Pickled onions would also be great on a chili dog.

Make these chili dogs for your next backyard BBQ, and I know they’ll be a hit. They’re so easy and delicious. Enjoy!
