Chili Dogs topped with cheese, onions, and crunch corn chips is an easy dinner recipe. Grill the hot dogs or cook them on the stove and then pile them into warm buns with all the toppings. Add some chips or fries on the side for a fun and easy dinner.

This chili dogs recipe is always a family-favorite dinner at our house. Hot dogs, chili, and soft buns are a classic combination.
I like to grill the hot dogs during the summer to get those nice char marks, but you can also cook them on the stove if you don’t have a grill.
I use canned chili to keep it simple, but any chili you like will work. Use your favorite homemade chili recipe or choose a favorite prepared one.
Don’t forget the toppings! We like lots of cheddar cheese, some red onion, and some corn chips on top for extra crunch.
This is an easy weeknight dinner – if you love chili cheese dogs, you’ll love how easy they are to make at home.

How to Make Chili Dogs
- Use your favorite kind of hot dogs – we like all beef hot dogs or turkey dogs.
- You can use any kind of chili. We prefer the ones without beans.
- Classic chili dog toppings are chopped onions (red or yellow onions) and shredded cheddar cheese (or jack cheese)
- We always add corn chips or Fritos for a crunchy component.
- I recommend grilling the hot dogs, either on an indoor or outdoor grill. Preheat grill to medium-high heat.
- You can also boil the hot dogs or cook them in the microwave or air fryer. You can also pan fry them. Regardless, they’ll only take a few minutes.
- Toast your buns cut side down so they get the light char marks.
- Serve as a hot dog bar so everyone can add their favorites.
- Switch up the garnishes and try sliced green onions, pickled jalapenos, and chopped herbs like cilantro or parsley. Pickled onions would also be great on a chili dog.

Storing leftover Chili Dogs
- Don’t assemble more than you will eat – they won’t store well made.
- Store leftover hot dogs in an airtight container in the fridge. Rewarm in a skillet, microwave, or air fryer.
- Store toppings in the refrigerator.
