A Salty Puppy Mocktail is a non-alcoholic version of a Salty Dog! It’s a refreshing grapefruit drink that’s a little sweet and a little tart – and you’re not going to miss the alcohol.

A Salty Dog Cocktail is made with grapefruit, vodka, and has a salted rim. I love grapefruit coolers so I set out to make a virgin salty dog and came up with the Salty Puppy Mocktail. It’s got the grapefruit you’d expect with lime juice and a salted rim. I call it a Salty Puppy because it’s the virgin version of the grown up original.
This drink is a tart and refreshing mocktail – it’s not super sweet so it’s perfect for those that don’t like carbonated sweet drinks.
Ingredient Notes
- Grapefruit Juice is usually found in the refrigerated juice aisle (near the orange juice).
- Lime Juice – I always love using fresh limes whenever possible, but bottled can be used.
- Salt – salt is one of the most important parts of the drink. Without a salted rim it would be called a Greyhound (puppy).

How to Make a Salty Puppy
- To salt your rim, run a wedge of lime around the edge then dip the edge upside down on a plate of salt.
- You can shake and strain this over ice, but I just add both juices to a glass and stir.
- It’s easy to make a party punch by doing 8 servings and adding some club soda to make it go a little farther.
- Salty Dog cocktails are usually served in lowball glasses over ice, with a slice of lime for garnish.
