Have you ever made something so good and so simple that you just had to share it? This was where this dip recipe came from. The photos aren’t stellar and I didn’t take a ton of them, but that’s okay. The flavor of this easy hummus speaks for itself!

I absolutely love hummus; it’s one of those things I can eat by the spoonful. They sell so many flavors now that it’s almost impossible to choose which one you want to buy. And now you’ll have trouble deciding what to doctor your hummus with because this Caramelized Onion Hummus will be your new favorite appetizer or snack.

I actually made this recipe years ago and totally forgot about it and now I’m sharing it with you!

This hummus recipe only has two ingredients, so it’s an easy semi-homemade appetizer recipe.

All you need to make this dip are:

  1. Classic hummus (any brand)
  2. Onions

That’s it! With just a few steps, you’ll have a new flavor combination: caramelized onion hummus. It’s so heavenly you’ll want to eat it with a spoon.

Have you ever caramelized onions before? It’s easy to do! It just takes some time and patience.

How to caramelize onions:

  1. Start with a white or yellow or sweet onion. Use your favorite! Slice the onion as desired, depending on your recipe.
  2. Add a tablespoon of olive oil to the pan (per onion) and cook over medium heat, stirring often, covering the pan occasionally, for several minutes.
  3. It can take up to 30 minutes or more to completely caramelize your onions completely. Patience is key!

How to caramelize onions

Once your onions are fully caramelized, all you have to do is stir them into the hummus. You can use your favorite flavor hummus if you want, but I love using a classic or plain flavor so that you can really taste the flavor of the onions.

Sure you can buy your own caramelized onion hummus from Sabra or Costco, but really, making the onions at home is easy and makes the dip taste so much fresher!
