Have you ever bought a bag of chocolate covered pretzels? I did, once. Then I ate the entire bag in one sitting and vowed never to buy one again.

Instead, I just make my own chocolate coated pretzels whenever I feel like them…because they’re easy to make and it’s almost silly to buy them already dipped.

Dipped pretzel rods are actually one of my favorite things to make for any party for a few reasons: everyone loves them, they’re easy to personalize, easy to make, and you can make them ahead of time. Stored in an airtight container these pretzels will last over a week or two (or even longer).

I’ve made these for Christmas with red and green, for a rainbow party with rainbow sprinkles. You can make them for Halloween or St. Patrick’s Day or any holiday just by changing the color of the candy and the sprinkles.

If you’re afraid of dipping things, don’t be. It’s actually really easy to dip pretzel rods; easier than dipping twisted pretzels or truffles or anything like that.

Patriotic Chocolate Dipped Pretzels are a fun treat to add to a 4th of July dessert table!

For this patriotic pretzel version, I used white chocolate to coat the pretzels and then drizzled on blue candy and sprinkled with red sprinkles. You can make these for the 4th of July or any Americana themed party in so many red, white, and blue ways:

  • Use white or milk chocolate, no drizzle, and just top with sprinkles.
  • Drizzle with red and blue candy melts.
  • Dip them in red, then dip them in blue at the top like a flag.

The possibilities are endless.

I do get some questions when I dip things in chocolate. Let’s try to break down the process so it’s easier.

What chocolate do you use when making chocolate covered pretzels?

For ease, I like using almond bark or candy melts. You can find Almond Bark and Candiquik in the baking aisle of most grocery stores and you can find candy melts at any craft store. The Candiquik tastes the best out of the three options. I like using this for dipping because it’s easy to melt (the Candiquik even comes with it’s own tray) and it’s made for dipping. It has less of a chance of seizing plus it’ll be smoother and dry firmer than chocolate chips.

How do you dip the pretzels easily without a mess?

I love melting my chocolate in a paper bowl (like Dixie brand) for easy cleanup. (Washing dried chocolate out of a regular bowl is time consuming.) When it comes time to dip the pretzels, I transfer the melted candy to a large cup (like a Solo cup) so the candy is as deep as at least 2/3 of the pretzel. Then just dip the pretzels, tap the excess off, and place on a cookie sheet lined with wax or parchment paper. Throw away the cup when you’re done, no mess!

My chocolate is too thick! How do I make melted chocolate thinner?

If you’re using almond bark, this doesn’t happen often, but sometimes it does. Maybe the candy is old or it’s melted a bit and hardened again, but don’t worry. You can make it thinner just by adding vegetable or canola oil, coconut oil, or shortening. Just do NOT add water, that will ruin it. Start with 1 teaspoon, stir, and see if that helps. (Note: adding too much will make your chocolate not dry as hard, so don’t add too much.)

How long does it take for the chocolate covered pretzels to dry? How do I store them?

If you pop the cookie sheet in the refrigerator, they’ll dry within minutes. Place them in an airtight container or ziploc bag and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. (Or even longer, most likely).

I love making these a week ahead of any party and storing them. Make ahead desserts are the best!

These are so pretty served in jars or vases. I like to add sprinkles or colorful candy to fit the theme of my party to hold them up. They always disappear because a salty sweet snack is something everyone loves!
